Double knitting is a cool knitting technique that allows you to produce a double layer of Stockinette Stitch fabric with mirror-image colorwork while knitting both layers at the same time.
For this introduction to double knitting, we will create pot holders from one of two patterns. Both are free on Ravelry and, of course, you are welcome to make both if you wish!
The simpler of the two patterns is a simple stripe – you can use whatever colors you want – we suggest you stick to only 2 colors for now and once you master the technique you can get as creative as you wish! Here is a link to the pattern.
The other choice has a picture of a coffee/tea cup with steam rising above. It is a little more complex but we are sure everyone will be able to create it if they choose. Here is a link to the pattern.
The primary skill you will learn is double knitting
Materials:
- 2 colors of worsted-weight yarn – cotton or wool – 1 skein each
- Needles for the striped potholder size 3
- Needles for the mug potholder – sizes 5 and 7
- Tapestry Needle
Remember, participation in our knit and crochet alongs is free when you purchase your materials at Yarn & Thread Expressions. Otherwise, the cost is $15 per session. Please plan to work only on the current or past KAL/CAL project.
